• The San Jose Mercury News contributes to the “Before It Was Cool, Inc.” files: “Major companies are testing whether it would pay to tuck away their world famous logos in favor of more hipster guises” because “marketing experts say there’s a growing preference for qualities like ‘real’ and ‘authentic.'” But it doesn’t usually go very well; Yum Brands, which owns Taco Bell, KFC, and Pizza Hut, was forced to apologize after opening a Vietnamese sandwich shop in Dallas with a red star logo. The logo, “a common symbol of communism, immediately upset the local Vietnamese community,” which is made up of immigrants who fled the communist government for America. (Via Corey Pein.)
