Daily Bafflements

donuts

• San Francisco’s “Bespoke Donuts” offers donuts in unusual flavors (which are, we hope, served by these bow-tied and suspendered fellows)—flavors like pulled pork, herb and hummus, and chicken pot pie. How unappetizingly hip.

• High-cost lenders are finding ways to circumvent the Military Lending Act, and are preying on military members with loans that have astronomical fees attached, reports ProPublica and Marketplace.

• A story about selling plasma to pay the rent, courtesy of Baffler contributing editor Barbara Ehrenreich’s very ambitious Economic Hardship Reporting Project.

• A new book collecting Oscar Wilde’s journalism and highly-opinionated criticism includes his writing on food (risotto is “a delightful dish”) and women’s fashion (he recommended that women wear clogs more often) and other books (he dismisses one novel as being one of those books that are “more easy to write than they are to read”).
