• Photographers James and Karla Murray documented the changing faces of Manhattan in their book Store Front: The Disappearing Faces of New York. “Then and now” photograph pairings are nothing new, but what’s stunning about these particular photos is that the rich and storied “then” shots being placed in contrast to the shiny “now” ones are from just three, or five, or eight years ago.

• A brain-scan study by neuroscientists at the University of Chicago has found that people who care about justice are swayed more by reason than feeling. In other words, “Individuals who are sensitive to justice and fairness do not seem to be emotionally driven,” said Jean Decety, the lead author of the report. “Rather, they are cognitively driven.”

Pacific Standard is running a series all this week called “Opting Out”—that is, “homesteaders, back-to-the-landers, anti-government survivalists” and more. Turn down the hand-crank radio, pull up a camp chair and some powdered eggs.

• The billionaires of London (London being the new “billionaire capital” of Europe, of course) report that they would “never spend less than £10m [about $16.6 million] on a London property (unless it is for a servant).” Good heavens!
